Dust just seems to cling to skirting boards, making them extremely frustrating to clean – unless you manage to get your hands on this one affordable item. And, no, it’s not a duster. Skirting boards exist in houses to form junctions between construction materials and to help prevent wear and tear at the base of the wall. However, this also makes them a prime gathering spot for dust and dirt.

Aside from making your house look dirty, letting dust accumulate on surfaces can lead to a wide range of health issues. Just some of the most prevalent dust-related ailments include respiratory problems, asthma and allergies. In severe cases, dust can even contain lead, which can result in lead poisoning.

Fortunately, fans of the cleaning guru Mrs Hinch have shared a clever (and cheap) hack for getting rid of unwanted dirt. Mrs Hinch (full name Sophie Hinchcliffe) is a British author and household expert who regularly shares cleaning hacks to her over 4.3 million Instagram followers. As such, fans of her domestic savviness regularly congregate in group chats where they share hacks of their own.

A member of a Facebook group chat, Sarah Davenport, kicked the discussion off when she asked, “How often does everyone clean their skirting boards?” And what do you use on them? Mine always seem to be dirty,” she continued. The post was quick to receive a flurry of comments, many of which suggested she use fabric softener. Amy Linkson replied, “Watered down fabric softener.” She added, “The kids do it with a spray bottle and dusting cloth, they love that job!” Mich Elle advised, “I pull all the furniture out and get a dishmatic filled with Comfort and water and just scrub and dry.”.
