Two brothers were found dead by their own father on a beach after taking a Christmas Day swim. Felipy da Silva de Oliveira, 16, and big brother Edley Matheus, 24, had taken a dip off the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The fun day out turned to disaster when the younger of the two was pulled into the South Atlantic by the strong tides.
Intent on saving his sibling Edley swam after him and was followed by a lifeguard, but he was unable to reach the pair. Tragically, both brothers were found drowned the next day by search teams - which included their heartbroken father Marcos André de Oliveira.
Felipy's body was discovered in the sea near the Solemar resort by surfers while his elder brother was found by swimmers at another beach around two miles away. Their bodies were sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) to undergo autopsies. Police and coastguard officials are investigating the deaths.
Their funeral was held yesterday. Marcos said: “I was hugged by everyone... everyone here knows my children.”. This year more than 100 people have drowned off the coast of Sao Paulo. Earlier this year two influencers drowned in a yacht party in Brazil after refusing to wear lifejackets before their boat was sunk by a huge wave. Victims Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, were found dead after their overcrowded boat sank off a stretch of coast known as the Devil's Throat.
