UFC chief Dana White has reassured fans, insisting that Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall will in fact go head-to-head for the undisputed heavyweight world championship. Jones produced a scintillating performance in his last outing against MMA legend Stipe Mioicic, knocking the American out in the third round. In the build-up to the heavyweight showdown, 'Bones' hinted at retiring after the clash, but teased after the bout that he may stick around for one last fight and give the fans what they want.
As for Aspinall, the British superstar hasn't fought since defending his interim strap last July against Curtis Blaydes. The 31-year-old is regarded as the best heavyweight on the planet, with many insisting that Jones is doing his utmost best to avoid facing the Salford scrapper. That said, one man is desperate to make the fight is White. The UFC supremo has recently provided a slight update on the superfight, teasing that it's likely that the pair will face-off inside the cage. In an interview with Piers Morgan, the American was quizzed on the topic of Aspinall. When told he wants to face the heavyweight champion, White replied: "He wants to fight everybody.".
White's answer prompted Morgan to reply: "He thinks he’ll beat Jon Jones." The UFC president was then quick to sing the British fighter's praises, saying: "I love that! A young, aggressive heavyweight that he actually wants to fight all the best. The problem in this business is you have a lot of guys who say things publicly, but behind the curtains don’t mean it, don’t really want these fights. Tom Aspinall is not that guy. Tom Aspinall wants to fight all the best in the world and I love that.".
Pushing further on the topic, Morgan then asked White how good Aspinall really is, before the 55-year-old teased the potential showdown with Jones. "Very good," he said. "We’re going to find out, though. We make this Jon Jones fight... obviously, a fight like that for a young and talented heavyweight and if he can win and he can beat Jon Jones, it’s life-changing." He added: "If you’re a fighter, you better have that. That’s what you have to have. If you want to be one of the all time greats, that’s exactly what you have to have.".
The potential showdown between the pair will arguably go down as one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport. Therefore, it's likely that both men will be rewarded handsomely for their efforts. Recently, UFC commentator Joe Rogan publicly retracted his comments after claiming Jones is asking for $30million to take on Aspinall. During a recent episode of his podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, the 57-year-old revealed the staggering fight purse 'Bones' was targeting for the potential showdown against Aspinall. “The rumour is that he wants $30 million”, Rogan said before adding, “I hope they [UFC] pay it.”.
However, he has since rescinded his comments after UFC boss and long-time friend White got in touch with him. “I have to correct something because there was a conversation I had with Yannis Pappas and Chris Distefano," he said in separate podcast episode. "We were talking about Jon Jones. I heard a rumour that Jon Jones wanted $30 million to fight Tom Aspinall. I did hear that rumor and I did hear that the UFC said yes, but it is not true. Dana contacted me, said that rumor is bulls**t. So I felt obligated to tell everybody that was a fake rumour… [But] I don’t remember who told me that.".
