The distraught mother of a baby boy who Lucy Letby was convicted of murdering has hit out at the campaign to free the former neo-natal nurse. The parent, who cannot be named for legal reasons, called the campaign "disrespectful" and "very upsetting". Speaking today after a two-hour press conference, during which a doctor told how a panel of experts claimed Letby’s convictions were "one of the major injustices of modern times".

Retired Canadian medic Dr Shoo Lee presented the findings of 14 international experts at the briefing - that the 14 babies murdered or harmed by Letby were actually victims of bad medical care and died or collapsed because of natural causes. But the mum said tonight: "Every aspect of what they are doing is so disrespectful, it is very upsetting. They said the parents want to know the truth, but we’ve had the truth. We believe in the British justice system, we believe the jury made the right decision. We already have the truth and this panel of so-called experts don’t speak for us.".

Letby's new legal team have, with the findings of the report, lodged an application with the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which investigates potential miscarriages of justice, in a bid to have her convictions overturned. She is serving 15 whole life orders after being found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others, with two attempts on one of her victims, at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. The former nurse, born in Hereford, has twice had applications to quash her convictions rejected by the Court of Appeal.

Speaking at the press conference in central London, Dr Shoo Lee declared: "...we did not find murders. In all cases, death or injury were due to natural causes or just bad medical care.... In our opinion, the medical opinion, the medical evidence doesn't support murder in any of these cases, just natural causes and bad medical care.". The panel, who worked pro bono, includes members from six countries – Canada, the US, Japan, Germany, Sweden and the UK. The mum, however, described the conference "distasteful and inappropriate". She told Daily Mail she and other parents of children believe the jury made the right decision in convicting Letby after her ten-month trial at Manchester Crown Court.

A Criminal Cases Review Commission spokesman appealed for "everyone [to] remember the families affected by events at the Countess of Chester Hospital". He added: "We have received a preliminary application in relation to Ms Letby’s case, and work has begun to assess the application. We anticipate further submissions being made to us.". Mark McDonald, Letby’s barrister, said she was following developments from her prison cell at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey and had "hope" she could eventually be released.
