Around 40 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade have rushed to the site of a house fire in East Ham this morning. Six fire engines are reportedly on-site at Benson Avenue close to Upton Park station, where they are attending to a blaze at a mid-terrace residential property.
According to the fire brigade, “part of the first floor and the loft of a mid-terraced house are alight.”. Fire services were first called around 8:30 this morning and mobilised crews from a number of fire stations, including Stratford, Poplar, Plaistow, East Ham and Barking to attend the scene.
Attending services are encouraging people to avoid the area as they tackle the blaze. Transport agency Inrix confirmed that the emergency has resulted in road closures around the site in both ways between Claughton Road and Wilson Road and detours are currently in operation.
Fire services confirmed that they have not determined the cause of the fire at this time. News of the East London blaze came hours after London’s fire brigade rushed to the scene of another large fire at a residential property in Upper Norwood. A total of 10 people were rescued after a major fire broke out in the block of south London flats in the early hours of the morning.
More than 60 firefighters attended the scene, using ladders to rescue residents from the upper floors of the building while also tackling the flames. Six residents were rushed to hospital, and an investigation is currently underway. The fire has since been brought under control.
