Fan favourite Nigel Bates' heartbreaking secret had been revealed on EastEnders in a new health storyline. The character, who returned weeks ago after leaving Walford back in 1998, has clearly been hiding something from pal Phil Mitchell. Amid fears for the character from fans, Nigel confirmed to Yolande Trueman on Wednesday evening that he had been diagnosed with dementia.

The BBC soap has now announced the show will explore young on-set dementia in the emotional storyline, as we see Nigel sharing more about his health and the difficulties he faces living with the condition. We learn more about his decision to return to Walford after almost three decades away, following his devastating health news.

Viewers saw Nigel telling Yolande the truth on Wednesday night, confiding in her for the first time and begging her not to tell anyone. Upcoming scenes will see the challenges Nigel faces, as well as those faced by his friends and loved ones as he lives the condition.

EastEnders is working with experts and organisations in the field, including Dementia UK, on the storyline. Soap boss Chris Clenshaw said: "Nigel’s story will explore the challenges faced by people diagnosed with young on-set dementia and their loved ones, which is why working with Dementia UK has been so vital. As Nigel’s story unfolds, viewers will learn more about the decisions he’s made and how he’s coping with such a difficult diagnosis.".

Chief Admiral Nurse and CEO of Dementia UK Dr Hilda Hayo said: "We’re pleased to be working alongside EastEnders to help raise awareness of young on-set dementia, a condition which is often misunderstood. Obtaining a diagnosis of young on-set dementia can be challenging, and it is often even harder to find age-appropriate support.
