Ruby Allen’s (Louisa Lytton) past came back to haunt her in tonight’s EastEnders episode, and led to bad news for more Walford residents. The market traders of Albert Square are currently at war with the council, who want to close their beloved market to make room for redevelopments in the area.

Martin Fowler (James Bye) has been at the forefront of the movement to put a stop to the council’s plans, and managed to secure a meeting with a local councillor. However, as the day of the meeting rolled round, Martin was overwhelmed with other important tasks, such as trying to convince Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) not to plead guilty to a murder she didn’t commit, and preparing for son Roman to come home from hospital.

With Martin overwhelmed, Ruby offered to step up for the community by taking his place at the council meeting, assuring him that her PR experience would make her the perfect candidate. Martin gratefully agreed, though as the meeting rolled around his fellow market traders weren’t so convinced.

When Councillor Barker arrived and the meeting got underway, both sides made it clear that neither of them were prepared to budge on their position. It was then that Ruby spoke up, insisting that the market was an institution and a major part of Albert Square.

However, Councillor Barker soon interrupted her to ask if she was the daughter of notorious gangster Johnny Allen. Johnny terrorised Walford from 2005 until his death in 2006, and it seemed that his evil streak started long before then, as Council Barker recalled how he had stolen his dad’s lunch money every day at school.
