As the Newcastle players and staff stood in unison with the away end after a perfect week that saw three wins, 11 goals and a place booked in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, the travelling fans began to sing Alexander Isak’s name before going on to one of their away day classics that goes by the ring of ‘I wanna stay here’.

What Saturday’s display did was highlight exactly why Newcastle need Isak to stay. It was his first hat-trick for the club and the Swedish forward now has 41 Premier League goals in 67 appearances, since joining for a club record £60m from Real Sociedad in 2022.

With the transfer window opening next week, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are understood to be admirers of Isak and Eddie Howe knows that he may face a fight to keep hold of the 25-year-old, who the club value well in excess of £100M. Without the offer of European football and Newcastle not wanting to fall foul of Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), recent reports have suggested that contract talks have stalled but Howe laughed when he was asked about the situation.

‘I don’t think contract talks started, I think that’s the issue,’ the Newcastle boss said, when asked about Isak’s current deal, which expires in 2028. ‘There's no part of me or anyone at Newcastle that wants to let Alex go,’ Howe insisted.
