Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh have been cancelled this year. Officials responsible for organising the immensely-popular New Year's Eve festival said that strong winds have forced them to scrap all events set to take place tonight, December 30, and during tomorrow's Hogmanay. Among the acts was a concert in Princes Street Gardens from the rock band, Texas.

A street party and fireworks party that were due to be held have also been cancelled, with officials citing public safety concerns. It comes after the Met Office issued yellow wind and rain warnings for Tuesday. The Traditional Torchlight Procession, which usually kicks off celebrations for the 60,000-strong crowd, was cancelled on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Unique Assembly, which runs Edinburgh's Hogmanay festival, said: "We have unfortunately been unable to continue with preparations and necessary set-up for Edinburgh's Hogmanay outdoor events due to extreme weather and forecast conditions.

"Therefore, for safety reasons we, along with our event partners, have taken the difficult decision to cancel all outdoor events. We know that this will be hugely disappointing to all hoping to celebrate Hogmanay in Edinburgh and that people travel from around the world to be here at the Home of Hogmanay.".

The company added that ticketholders will be contacted with information on how refunds can be claimed. The spokesperson confirmed the indoor events would go ahead as normal, adding: "All indoor events are taking place as planned throughout the festival, including tonight’s performance of Swamplesque at Assembly Hall, the sold-out Idlewild concert at the Assembly Rooms, and on December 31, the Bairns New Year Revels and New Year Revels at the Assembly Rooms, and sold-out Candlelit Concert at St. Giles' Cathedral.
