Everton striker Beto revealed the reasons behind his heart-warming celebration after scoring his first Premier League goals since October. Beto gestured towards the crowd at Goodison Park after netting twice in Everton’s impressive 4-0 win against Leicester and afterwards explained he was sharing his joy with stricken team-mate Orel Mangala who suffered a season-ending ACL injury the previous week at Brighton.
‘I was picking out Mangala,’ confirmed Beto. ‘He had told me earlier in the day at our training ground at Finch Farm that he would be in the stands. ‘He said if I scored, to point to him, so that is what I tried to do.’. The gesture symbolised the togetherness at Everton since David Moyes was appointed. Saturday represented their third win in a row and from being in serious relegation trouble, they are now nine points above the bottom three.
A bit-part player like Beto has been accommodated so when he had to step in to replace the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin, he made an impact with a first-half brace adding to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal after only 10 seconds – the quickest recorded in Everton’s history. Iliman Ndiaye added a late fourth. Beto ended his three-month goal drought for Everton and celebrated in heart-warming fashion. The striker revealed that his celebration was dedicated to his team-mate, Orel Mangala, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Brighton last week.
Before the game, Beto promised Mangala that he would point towards him if he scored. ‘I feel really good and pleased. To score twice is exciting and the team's performance was perfect. We fought for every ball,’ said Beto. ‘It has been a hard 18 months for me. I just put in my mind that if I keep working and stay prepared, the opportunities will come. I showed I can play in the Premier League. ‘I know I can improve. This game will give me confidence and give confidence to the team. I don’t think I will be the answer; I think we [the team] will be the answer.’.
