A motoring expert has issued a warning to all drivers about the importance of keeping one specific car part squeaky clean to dodge hefty fines. Not many drivers relish the thought of washing their cars in the cold weather, but with winter dirt from salt and rain, cars can become mucky much quicker. An expert from LKQ Euro Car Parts has stressed the necessity for drivers to keep their number plates spotless to avoid penalties. They advised: "The number plates on your vehicle should be legible at all times, and drivers caught with an obstructed plate could receive a fine of up to £1,000. Something as simple as a build-up of dirt and dust can block the letters and numbers, so it's important to clean your vehicle regularly to ensure your number plate is always visible.".

Dirty number plates are a definite no according to the Highway Code, as they prevent other road users, authorities, and traffic cameras from identifying the vehicle. Police officers aren't the only ones who might stop you. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are also on the lookout for offenders. Those caught driving with unclean or obscured number plates risk fines up to £1,000 and three points on their licence, reports the Express.

However, LKQ Euro Car Parts reassures that while you don't have to wash the entire car. However, it's crucial to regularly clean the number plates to stay on the right side of the law. They also advised: "If you don't have time to clean your whole vehicle, make sure to check your numberplate on a regular basis and give it a quick wash down with a sponge and some soapy water so it remains legible and within regulations. This should only take a minute or two, and can mean you avoid a hefty fine.".
