One of the experts campaigning to free Lucy Letby was the head of a professional body which conducted a flawed review of the neonatal unit where she murdered babies. On Tuesday a panel of international medical experts claimed there were alternative explanations for each of Letby's convictions for murder or attempted murder. Chairman Dr Shoo Lee told the press conference: "In all cases death or injury were due to natural causes or just bad medical care.".

It is thought the findings will form part of an application to have her case investigated as a potential miscarriage of justice. Also present on Tuesday was Professor Neena Modi, who it has since emerged was president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) from 2015 to 2018. During that time, bosses at the Countess of Chester Hospital asked the RCPCH for help following the deaths of several babies. The organisation carried out a review in September 2016. The public inquiry into Letby’s crimes heard that the RCPCH shouldn't have conducted the review after learning about the suspicions of doctors. The RCPCH also accepted that the review "contributed to uncertainty and lack of clarity that bedevilled the response" to the spike in baby deaths.

The Mirror has contacted Professor Modi for comment. The RCPCH has said it doesn't hold a position over Letby’s convictions. Letby is serving 15 whole life sentences for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. She has already had two bids to appeal against her convictions rejected. The mother of one baby who Letby attempted to murder described Tuesday's press conference as a "publicity stunt". She told MailOnline: "Every aspect of what they are doing is so disrespectful, it is very upsetting. They said the parents want to know the truth, but we’ve had the truth.
