The moment in Love Actually where Emma Thompson's character opens a Joni Mitchell CD from her husband after expecting a gold necklace remains one of the hardest scenes to watch in a Christmas film. Released in 2003, the Richard Curtis flick follows the intertwining lives of eight couples as they navigate the festive season. Among those characters is Karen (Thompson) and her husband Harry (played by the late Alan Rickman).

Throughout the film viewers witness an increasingly distant Harry beginning an affair with his secretary Mia (Heike Makatsch). In one tense scene, he decides to buy a heart-shaped necklace for his office beau while on a shopping trip with his wife, hurrying along the flamboyant shop assistant (Rowan Atkinson) as he painstakingly wraps the gift.

Karen later stumbles across the necklace in her husband's pocket, believing it is for her. After excitedly ripping open her present on Christmas Day expecting the piece of jewellery, she realises it was never meant for her. Holding in her despair, she excuses herself from the room before bursting into tears privately. The moment has been hailed as one of the "best scenes ever" by audiences. However, Karen would have a whole new reason to be upset in 2024 if she realised how much that necklace would cost today.

In the film, Harry pays £270 for the gold necklace with an embedded red gemstone. While it is not stated in the film whether the necklace is solid gold or what the gold carat is, analysis by Diamonds Factory has predicted that the piece would now be valued at £4,484 - that's an increase in value of 1,560 per cent.
