Life after Wayne Rooney reached new heights as Plymouth sprung one of the shocks of the FA Cup third round by dumping out Brentford. The Championship’s bottom club stunned their Premier League opponents with Morgan Whittaker’s fine strike from outside the area silencing the Gtech Stadium and denting one of the best home records in the country.

Rooney’s unhappy spell in charge ended on New Year’s Eve after just 23 matches, with successor Miron Muslic in the stands to witness the shock of round so far as Plymouth’s mini-revival continued, following creditable draws against Bristol City and Stoke City in the league.

A documentary chronicling Plymouth’s battle to survive was reportedly shelved during a downturn in results under Rooney, with no plans to revive it. Unfortunate timing, perhaps, though for those visiting fans in attendance they will have memories to savour. It was the club’s first victory over a top-flight club for more than 40 years.

Plymouth have conceded 35 goals in 14 away league games this season, while Brentford’s home record is second only to Liverpool in England. But Thomas Frank, who made six changes, was left shocked at the end as the visitors won away for the first time this season.

A desperate Frank introduced Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in a bid to breach the worst defence in the Championship but Plymouth caretaker coach Kevin Nancekivell secured a stunning victory to reach the fourth round.
