Four people have been stabbed in the Israeli capital of Tel Aviv after a man reportedly launched a frenzied attack in a popular nightlife area. A spokesperson for a nearby hospital said it was treating three people as a result of the incident, including one victim who was in "a serious condition with a knife wound to the neck".
Authorities later revealed the identity of the attacker as Abdelaziz Kaddi, a US-based Moroccan national who had arrived in Israel just days earlier. An off-duty police officer reportedly shot him dead at at the scene. On Tuesday evening, Kaddi stabbed three people near the busy street of Nahalat Binyamin before attacking a fourth near Kalisher Street.
An investigation is now underway by Israel's intelligence agency to understand how Kaddi gained entry into Israel. Images have circled on social media featuring a number of police vehicles and crowds of people, as well as a lifeless figure lying on the ground.
The attack came hours after Israeli security forces launched a fresh assault on Jenin, killing at least eight Palestinians and injuring 35 others in the West Bank. It also comes days after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into play on Sunday that halted 15 months of bloody conflict that has reduced much of the Gaza Strip to rubble.
More than 46,000 Palestinians, most of which were civilians, were killed by Israeli forces during the ongoing bombardment of the occupied strip following the October 7 attack in which 1,200 Israelis were killed. In the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas released a number of Israeli hostages back to their families, while Israel also released many Palestinians they had been holding under arrest.
