THE remains of Grenfell Tower will be demolished over the next two years, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has announced. She caused outrage by confirming plans to pull down the fire-ravaged West London block. Some bereaved relatives and survivors of the 2017 horror, which claimed 72 lives, wanted its remains left as a memorial. But Ms Rayner yesterday insisted engineers could not find a safe way to keep it standing.
She said parts of the block could be used to build a new memorial. Survivors accused her of “ignoring the voices of the bereaved” following a meeting about the tower’s future last week. The Grenfell United campaign group said no one supported demolition. But defending the decision, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing said: “Engineers also advise it is not practicable to retain many of the floors of the building in place as part of a memorial that must last in perpetuity.
