George Russell insists it is impossible to target a set number of race wins for the upcoming Formula 1 season. For the first time since he joined Mercedes, the Brit is the undisputed leader of their drivers this year. Three campaigns in which he acquitted himself well against Lewis Hamilton have convinced Toto Wolff that Russell is ready to lead the team into the future without the seven-time champion.

It remains to be seen what the balance of power on the grid will look like in 2025. The more optimistic predictions for the season ahead have suggested the top four teams and all eight drivers representing them could be in title contention and challenging for the podium on most race weekends.

There could be plenty of opportunities, then, for Russell to better his total of two race victories achieved in 2024. It would have been three had he not been disqualified after the Belgian Grand Prix because his car was found to be underweight. But standing on the top step of the podium more regularly this season won't, in itself, make Russell happy with his work. The 27-year-old says he will only feel that way if he doesn't let any opportunities slip through his grasp over the course of the campaign.

"My goals are very much the same and the approach has not changed," he told the official Mercedes team website. "Formula 1 is so unique, so you cannot really set goals like that. If I say that I want to win four races this year because last year I won three [sic], I am not going to be satisfied if I win five but the car is capable of 10.
