Gerwyn Price has told snubbed darts star what they need to do to usurp him in the Premier League. Price and Nathan Aspinall were the most controversial wildcard selections for the 2025 tournament, which begins in Belfast on Thursday. Both endured poor 2024 campaigns but were still given the nod, in part thanks to their stage presence and popularity with fans. That didn’t go down well with the likes of World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker and world No.6 Dave Chisnall, who both missed out. De Decker called his omission “scandalous” and insisted Price and Aspinall didn’t deserve their spots.
Both reckon Aspinall was picked solely for his Killers-backed walk-on, while De Decker brought up Price’s previous criticism of the tournament. He fumed: “If Price throws badly for two out of the first three weeks, he’ll post something on Instagram again and start complaining. But they’ll stick him in again.”. Price accepts the likes of De Decker deserve to have their say but said that “one-off major success is not enough anymore”. He added that long-term consistency carries greater weight in the selection process.
“They deserve to have their opinions,” he said in an interview for Reach’s Premier League and 2025 preview publication. “There have been players in the past who have won majors but haven’t got in the Premier League. I think those players have an argument. GET INVOLVED! Do you think Gerwyn Price deserves to be in the Premier League? Tell us in the comments section. “But they need to keep playing and be a bit more consistent. Winning one major final probably isn’t good enough, you have to back it up and keeping doing it year on year.
“People have said I don’t deserve it, that Nathan doesn’t deserve it. But we’ve been playing well for years. One blip doesn’t mean we have to get kicked out. Hopefully, I can back it up after being given another opportunity. “I think I’ve given a lot and sacrificed a lot over the last couple of years. I didn’t have the best of seasons in 2024 and if I hadn’t been in, I would have known why. But in my eyes, I deserve another chance and I’m ready for it this time.”.
