The UK Government has launched a consultation on the use of copyrighted material in training artificial intelligence models as part of a strategy to fuel AI innovation and boost earnings for the creative sector. A lack of clarity around whether it is right and fair that copyright material be used to train the models that are powering the new waves of AI tools has sparked debate around the world, with legal cases launched by firms and individuals in the creative industry over what they argue is unlicensed use of their material.

However, some publications and media houses have inked deals with AI companies for their content to be utilized in model development. This 10-week-long consultation will wrap up on February 25, examining issues like fostering trust within AI and creative fields, licensing methods, and fair compensation.

The Government plans to look at how broader data access might benefit AI developers and propel the UK's tech industry forward. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, said: "The UK has an incredibly rich and diverse cultural sector and a groundbreaking tech sector which is pushing the boundaries of AI.

"It’s clear that our current AI and copyright framework does not support either our creative industries or our AI sectors to compete on the global stage.". The government is rolling out a comprehensive set of proposals to clarify copyright laws in relation to AI, aiming to boost growth in both the AI and creative sectors as part of their Plan for Change Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, stated: "This is all about partnership: balancing strong protections for creators while removing barriers to AI innovation; and working together across government and industry sectors to deliver this.
