England captain Harry Kane has a release clause in his Bayern Munich contract that could one day pave the way for his return to the Premier League. Kane joined the Bundesliga club in the summer of 2023 from Tottenham in a deal that could eventually be worth £120million. But it has now emerged that there is a buy-out stipulation in the striker’s contract that he can activate. Indications in Germany claim that the clause could have been activated during the most recent winter transfer window for a fee of £67million, with the price set to drop to £54million next January.
Mail Sport, however, understands that Kane is currently very happy in Germany and has no intention to activate the clause any time soon. Nevertheless, news of the clause will alert a number of Premier League clubs - as well as other clubs across the world - who may be interested in bringing the prolific striker back to England if Kane shows any inclination to return to these shores. Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich in 2023, but has a release clause in his contract at the club.
The former Spurs star is 47 goals behind Alan Shearer's Premier League goalscoring record. Kane is happy at Bayern for now, but a return to England could appeal in the future. Intriguingly, when he left Spurs for the Allianz Arena, it is understood Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy negotiated first refusal as part of the agreement with Bayern. That clause can only be activated in the event of Bayern agreeing to sell Kane and the striker giving the green light to returning to Spurs, a club where he is idolised after becoming their all-time highest scorer.
Even then, there is no fixed fee in Tottenham’s first-option stipulation, meaning the club would still have to negotiate a price with Bayern before exercising the option. However, should a rival club ever activate his Bayern release clause, then Tottenham would have the possibility of matching the offer. Kane has scored 213 Premier League goals, just 47 behind Alan Shearer’s all-time record. And privately, Kane - knowing the landmark is within reach - would one day be open to having the opportunity to break Shearer’s long-standing record.
For the time being, though, Kane is fully focused on winning his first ever career winners medal with Bayern this season. Vincent Kompany’s side are six points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and face Celtic next month for a place in the Champions League knockout stages proper. Kane is a vital player for Bayern, having 70 goals in 72 appearances for Bayern. He became the fastest player to reach 50 Bundesliga goals in November, smashing the previous record held by Erling Haaland, who is now at Manchester City.
