Mrs Curry, lovingly known to everyone as “Momma D”, had roles in films including the Blues Brothers, Ten Commandments and Lady Sings the Blues. Great-granddaughter, Dalyce Kelley, announced the news in a Facebook post as at least 25 died and thousands of homes ruined in Southern California.

Ms Kelley also shared haunting footage of the devastation, showing the former star’s Cadillac and home reduced to ash. She had dropped Mrs Curry home on January 8 after a hospital appointment. But at the time thought the fires were too distant to reach the neighbourhood.

“I said, ‘I love you too’ and I made sure that she was safe inside. We were both so tired from the day at the hospital. I didn’t feel like she was in eminent danger because there was no evacuation order at that point. “Sometimes her kisses were too wet that you have to wipe it off a little bit. That’s who she was. Just loving. We kissed, said goodbye and I drove back to my home. That was the last thing we said to one another.”.
