Human remains have been found stuffed inside a suitcase after it was pulled from New York's East River. The suitcase was found by the New York Police Department (NYPD) Harbor Unit in the river close to Governors Island at about 5:30pm local time on Wednesday. Officials said the remains were found stuffed inside the piece of luggage before being taken for examination. Emergency medical services are now examining the remains near South Street Seaport. Officials said it was not immediately clear whether the remains were that of a woman or a man, although they confirmed it was an adult.

The age and cause of death were not known as of Thursday morning. The medical examiner will work to determine the cause of death. An investigation into the death and the circumstances around it has been launched. Photos from the scene showed investigators examining the piece of luggage with flashlights after it was removed from the river. Several NYPD vehicles were also seen at the site where the suitcase was hauled out of the river.

Other images showed several police officers packed into a boat that trawled the river looking for clues to help piece together what happened. It is unclear how long the suitcase was in the river before being removed. The Mirror has contacted the NYPD for comment. The human remains are the latest to be found in suitcases discarded in New York City. Last year a body was found inside a suitcase that was dumped outside Long Island.

Authorities said the human remains were found inside the suitcase that was dumped in a wooded area close to an apartment building in Huntington Station. A dismembered body of a woman was also found in a suitcase in the city after a foul smell was reported coming from inside a flat. Residents at the building said the 22-year-old woman who lived at the flat had not been seen in about a week before she went missing in September, 2022. When a security guard entered the flat he discovered two suitcases with the victim's remains inside alongside a meat cleaver.
