Two-goal Abu Kamara apologised in the best way possible with a superb late volley that stunned leaders Leeds. The misfiring striker hadn’t scored in his opening 17 games for lowly Hull after a £4.5m summer move from Norwich. And he’d incurred the wrath of some supporters with an untimely New Year’s Day social media post. Just hours after being partly blamed for Middlesbrough’s injury-time winner against Tigers, he posted smiley emojis on Portsmouth’s Instagram account after they had secured a win.

Kamara, who spent last season on loan at Championship rivals Pompey, publicly apologised for its bad timing. But he started making up for it where it mattered most against Leeds. With keeper Illan Meslier in no man’s land, Kamara scored a quality fifth minute lob to get his account up and running. Even though Leeds hit back to forge 3-1 ahead with second half goals from Ao Tanaka, Dan James and Joel Piroe, he then helped pull off a remarkable fightback.

Joao Pedro bundled in after erring Meslier palmed a looping header onto his crossbar - when it looked like going over - in the 82nd minute. And Kamara, 21, stepped up with a brilliant 89th minute left-footed strike after Meslier flapped at a corner in a dramatic end to a pulsating Yorkshire derby.

Hull boss Ruben Selles, so positive helping them fight off bottom spot since taking over last month, admitted: “It feels like a perfect final end for him for what’s happened in the last couple of days. “I was confident [in his reaction] as he’s an honest person and gives everything. I knew he was able to make that type of performance and his team-mates wanted to be there for him.
