Drivers who suffer from certain common health conditions could be told by the DVLA to "stop driving" as part of a new crackdown. A stark warning has been issued by the DVLA, urging motorists with specific health issues to get in touch immediately. Car insurance guru Greg Wilson, the founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, alerted drivers that those experiencing "blackouts" or "fainting" are at risk and may potentially face having their licence revoked.
Mr Wilson warned: "Any health conditions which can cause blackouts or regular fainting such as syncope must be reported to the DVLA as losing consciousness behind the wheel can be a real danger.". The DVLA has clearly stated on its website: "You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don't tell DVLA about a medical condition that affects your driving. You may be prosecuted if you're involved in an accident as a result. Ask your doctor if your blackouts, fainting (syncope) or loss of consciousness affect your driving.
"You must tell DVLA if your condition affects your driving. Fill in form FEP1 and send it to DVLA. The address is on the form." It's important to note that transient loss of consciousness (TLoC) or 'blackout' is not uncommon - affecting close to half of the UK population at some stage in their life, reports Birmingham Live.
