Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively had a star-filled, Instagram-perfect wedding day - but the Deadpool star later branded it "a giant f****ing mistake". The Hollywood A-listers met when filming the Green Lantern in 2010 and married on September 9, 2012, at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The carefully planned wedding ceremony included a children's choir, a paper lantern send-off, and a sour cream wedding cake with peach-apricot preserves.
Blake's idol and New York neighbour, US homemaking legend Martha Stewart, even helped to design the big day while British singer Florence Welch, a close friend of the actress, serenaded the newlyweds with a few songs at the intimate event. So far so Hollywood but while Boone Hall is aesthetically beautiful, its past is very ugly... The venue is one of America's oldest working plantations and in the 19th century it was owned by Henry and John Horlbeck who were in the brick business. They built many public spaces in downtown Charleston, with 4,000,000 bricks being produced each year by 1850 using 85 slaves.
Remaining on the property are 12 feet by 30 feet slave cabins, which were used by sharecroppers through the 1940s. On the official website, Boone Hall Plantation acknowledges that slavery "is an important topic that must be discussed openly and honestly whenever plantation life is addressed". While the property doesn't shy away from its past, with a Black History of America exhibition available to visitors in the cabins dubbed "Slave Street," many feel two Hollywood stars worth a combined total of £300 million holding a wedding there was rather ill-judged.
In light of their ugly court battle with It Ends With Us star Justin Baldoni, the wedding scandal has resurfaced online. "It's something we'll always be deeply and unreservedly be sorry for," said Ryan, 48, during an interview with Fast Company. "It's impossible to reconcile. What we saw at the time was a wedding venue on Pinterest. What we saw after was a place built upon devastating tragedy.". The couple, who have four children together, went on to donate millions to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, which fights for racial justice and to support the Black Lives Matter movement. And they later renewed their vows at home in New York, in a bid to put the sorry mess behind them.
The venue is also famous for appearing in 2004's The Notebook, starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, which is considered one of the greatest romance films of all time. Ryan and Blake's "dream wedding" at Boone Hall featured a ceremony in a "rustic barn", in which Blake walked down the aisle to Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off of You "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and a reception in a white tent, where Florence performed and desserts includes s'mores bars and mini strawberry shortcakes.
Guests included Bette Midler and Blake's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel. The 37-year-old actress wore a couture Marchesa ballgown made from hand-draped silk with crystal and rose gold embroidery. Reynolds sported a Burberry suit and Blake's bridesmaids wore blush silk chiffon. Blake's beautiful bouquet featured pink jasmine, andromeda, dusty miller, and blushing bride hydrangea, with select petals dipped in rose-gold glitter to match her ballgown.
