Bank of Dave: The Loan Ranger is now available on Netflix and the film is loosely based on the real life of entrepreneur Dave Fishwick, from Lancashire. Rory Kinnear portrays the businessman in the Netflix adaptations, but the real Dave Fishwich was heavily involved in the process.
Having left school at 16 with no qualifications, he established David Fishwick Minibus Sales, which would eventually become the biggest minibus supplier in Britain. Following the recession, he found high street banks were no longer willing to lend his customers money.
With this in mind, he set up Burnley Savings and Loans, which used the advertising slogan Bank on Dave. Although the lending company is not an official UK registered bank, customers can deposit limited amounts and the company has helped thousands of people in financial difficulty.
Burnley Savings and Loans opened its doors in 2011 and in 2017, Dave first applied to become a UK regulated bank, offering an expanded range of products to a wider audience. To this day, he is still striving to get the business officially recognised. He was supported by the law firm JMW Solicitors LLP, who advised him in his attempts to start the micro bank for the Burnley community. Led by Head of Corporate, Chris Moss, the team advised the self-made millionaire when it came to the intricate banking regulations, reports Lancs Live.
