Many users of ChatGPT reported they were unable to access the desktop website and app for the artificial intelligence chatbot on Thursday morning (January 24). At the time of writing, the desktop version of ChatGPT is still suffering from issues. Users who visit the website are being greeted with the following error message: “Bad gateway. The web server reported a bad gateway error.”.
However OpenAI, the company behind the programme, has not commented on its status. Many users joked about the outage on social media, saying it was causing havoc with with their work. The bot’s mobile app also appears to be down. “Chatgpt down in the middle of the workday, I'm about to get fired, pray for me,” posted one user on X, formerly Twitter.
“IS CHATGPT DOWN AGAIN ARE YOU KIDDING I WAS WORKING ON MY ESSAY,” said another user, referencing the service’s sporadic outages. ChatGPT went down several times throughout last year, with a major outage affecting the bot, its API, and the Sora video generator for several hours.
On the other hand, we were able to use ChatGPT through Siri on iPhone - suggesting the service isn’t completely offline. ChatGPT has free and premium modes and can have human-like conversations with users, answering questions and completing tasks. It can also be used to write code, which has made it indispensable for many working in IT.
Alan Morrison, who lives in Walthamstow, told the Standard that the site had been working for his job as a computer developer but he had experienced disruption before. “I use it for coding, writing emails and admin tasks,” he said. “It would be very annoying if it was down.”.
