Is EMMA APPLETON the woman who brings bestsellers to the small screen? She starred in Everything I Know About Love and now she's the lead in The Road Trip

Emma Appleton is talking me through her 13 tattoos. ‘They really track the phases of my life – it’s like a living scrapbook,’ the 33-year-old says. They start with an amateurish-looking diamond on her left wrist: ‘It’s so bad, I had it done when I was 16, which is illegal,’ she says. ‘My parents were weirdly all right with it. They knew if they said anything I’d have got more.’.
Moving along her hands and arms, she shows me a tiny moon, the word ‘solace’, and one of Talking Heads (her and her best friend Alex’s favourite band), adding, ‘I’ve also got a playing card with the initials of my friends.’. The most recent is a tiny horseshoe on her shoulder blade. Isabella Laughland, who co-stars in the upcoming Paramount+ TV series The Road Trip, has a matching one. ‘We’d spent a month filming together in Bristol, then four months in Gran Canaria, having so much fun – going to waterparks at weekends, doing karaoke – and we wanted to make sure we still spoke to each other after we got back.’ And did it work? ‘Yes! I was texting Issy this morning.’.
Coat and catsuit, from a selection, Tom Ford. Putting friendships above everything and a fun, adventurous spirit are key to Appleton’s values and the shows that have made her one of the hottest actresses of the moment. She’s best known for her starring role in the hit 2022 BBC series Everything I Know About Love, adapted from Dolly Alderton’s bestselling memoir of 20-something millennial life. Sitting in a photographer’s studio in East London, she’s tall (5ft 11in) and slender (she started off as a model, of which more later) with hair in a choppy bob, huge brown eyes, ski-slope cheekbones and no make-up. She’s a picture of nonchalant chic, in a David Bowie Hunky Dory pullover from hip knitwear brand Hades and jeans from mega-influencer Camille Charrière’s collaboration with NA-KD.
