The emergence of Savinho as a match-winner is a sobering reminder to Britain's most expensive player of just how far he has fallen. For the second game running, Savinho was Manchester City's saviour, creating the first goal and providing two further assists in a man-of-the-match display against West Ham.

In contrast, City's £100million winger Jack Grealish, who used to occupy the left wing role now assigned to Savinho, sat glumly on the bench as the Brazilian ran the show. When Grealish was summoned, with six minutes left, the game was already won, the England winger brought on to run down the clock, with many City fans having already headed for the exits.

Grealish, undroppable when City won the Treble in 2023, did not score a goal in 2024 and managed just one assist, as well as being left out of the England squad that went all the way to the final of the Euros. The maverick talent who was once a star man for City is now a mere member of the supporting cast, with Pep Guardiola hopeful Savinho's impressive recent form can provide Grealish with the incentive to rediscover his own.

“It’s easy,” said Guardiola. “As much as he looks at himself, he will see the competition and that he has to compete, himself. Savinho is in better shape and everything than Jack and that’s why I played Savinho. "I want the Jack that won the Treble? Yeah, I want it. But I try to be honest with myself for that. What happened with Savinho’s delivery in the box? It’s higher than the other wingers in that position and so they have to fight.
