Jamie Oliver has sparked debate after adding cold custard to his dessert on his Channel 4 £1 meal series. The British celebrity chef, 49, cooked up some baked apples on last night's episode, complete with an almond and fruit stuffing. After baking the dish in the air fryer, Jamie scooped some cold custard out of a tin with a spoon, before slathering it onto his plate and placing the apples on top - rather than pouring it over in a traditional fashion.

Arranging the finished dish, he swore against using hot custard: 'This dessert is just one of those things that feels humble and grounded, but it always over delivers. 'And then we're going in with cold custard. You can heat it up if you're that way inclined but not in my world! Oh no, no no!. 'Come on nan, come on mum. Memories! A beautiful dessert, for under a pound a portion.'. At just 90p a portion, Jamie said the dessert is the 'perfect last-minute pud' and uses everyday ingredients.

But not everyone was convinced - as some branded his use of the quintessentially British sauce 'unacceptable', arguing that it should have been piping hot. Jamie Oliver has sparked debate after adding cold custard to his dessert on his Channel 4 £1 meal series. One person wrote: 'Baked apples with cold custard? I think we need to stage an intervention for Jamie Oliver.'. Another said: 'Cold custard is only acceptable in a trifle. In any other situation it smacks of incompetence.'.

However, one person said that Jamie had actually followed an unofficial dessert rule, writing: 'Hot pudding. Cold custard. Cold pudding. Hot custard.'. Jamie prepared his apples by hollowing them out, before making the stuffing and roasting the finished treat in the air fryer. He then whipped out a tin of custard - which appeared to be from Tesco - and generously spooned it onto his plate before tucking in.

It appears that the debate of using hot vs cold custard is one that people feel very strongly about. The page stated that the beloved dessert should not be served with custard, and 'certainly not' hot custard. Another said: 'Ice cream or cream on hot puddings, custard on cold puddings for me- I love the contrast of hot and cold!'. Meanwhile a Reddit post, under the thread r/CasualUK asked people to choose between hot and cold custard. There were very strong opinions either way, as one person said: 'Hot custard, hot baked beans, anything that is supposed to be hot should be hot damnit. You monsters!'. But others said: 'Cold, always cold,' while some favoured a compromise, writing: 'Hot custard with cold puddings. Cold custard with hit puddings. That way you can regulate the temperature of each mouthful by getting the proportions right.'.
