Team GB’s women’s 800m Olympic gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson has been voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2024. As a result, she becomes fourth woman in a row to win the award, following Mary Earps in 2023, Beth Mead in 2022 and Emma Raducanu in 2021. Teenage darts sensation Luke Littler, finished second in the vote, while cricketer Joe Root was third.

"I am in a bit of shock,” she said. "I am more excited for my coach [Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows] as I wouldn't be here without his guidance. "This year has been incredible and I achieved everything that I set out to do on the outdoor track. "I hope you love watching Paris and I wish you all a wonderful evening.".

The award caps a brilliant 12 months for Hodgkinson in which she claimed gold at the Paris Olympics, successfully defended her European title and set a new British record of one minute 54.61 seconds that made her the sixth fastest woman in history. Furthermore, Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, who coached Hodgkinson to the 800m gold medal in the Paris Olympics, were named as the BBC Sports Personality Coach of the Year.

England and Real Madrid football star Jude Bellingham, Para-cyclist Dame Sarah Storey and triathlete Alex Yee were the three other sports luminaries who made it on to the shortlist for the prestigious prize. Sir Mark Cavendish, who recently announced his retirement from cycling, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Tuesday night's ceremony in Salford.
