SIR Keir Stamer was last night facing demands to sack his Attorney General over his role in the deal to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Reform boss Nigel Farage accused Lord Hermer KC of hating “our country and our history”. In podcasts recorded before he joined the Government, left-wing lawyer Hermer said that every education secretary should be forced to read about violence in the British Empire when taking office.

Mr Farage said: “Lord Hermer hates our history and our country. "His role in the betrayal of our national interest over the Chagos Islands is unforgivable. "Starmer should fire him.”. Yesterday it emerged the PM’s claim that his giveaway of the islands was for national security reasons had first been devised by one of his lawyer pals. The argument about a threat to vital telecommunications on the island was first made by Philippe Sands KC in 2023.
