An animal charity in Los Angeles is working round the clock to house and treat pets harmed by the wildfires which have devastated the region. Pasadena Humane said they have taken in over 300 animals and their staff are working nonstop to help treat the pets with burns and injuries.
They wrote on Instagram: ‘These animals are being treated in our ICU. We are providing them with pain medications, wound care, fluid, and oxygen as needed.’. There are currently five wildfires active throughout LA and the neighbouring Ventura county, the latest of which, named Kenneth Fire, started on Thursday afternoon and quickly ballooned to cover around 1,000 acres in the west of the city.
A man was arrested on suspicion of arson after he was spotted walking through a neighbourhood close to Kenneth fire holding a blowtorch, although police have said they cannot confirm any connection between the suspect and the wildfires. The death toll has increased to 10 and over 3,000 buildings have been destroyed by the fires, with officials warning the total numbers will likely rise further over the coming days.
The Eaton Fire had destroyed the more than 100-year-old Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center which was a beloved gathering place for the local faith community. Its cantor, Ruth Berman Harris, and three others ran into the mosque and saved the Torah scrolls. The rest of the temple was burned down.
