Firework mortars and camp fuel canisters were found stuffed into the back of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside President-elect Donald Trump’s Las Vegas on New Year's Day. Authorities are now investigating potential terrorism after the vehicle was hired through a car rental app and reportedly driven more than 800 miles to Vegas from Colorado Springs. The driver, though, died inside the futuristic-looking pickup truck and seven people nearby suffered minor injuries. Police have now confirmed what was stuffed inside the car boot as they explore a potential link between the explosion and a separate terror attack more than 1,700 in New Orleans, Lousianna, which left 15 dead.

Jeremy Schwartz, acting special agent in charge for the FBI’s Las Vegas office, said: "Our number one goal is to ensure that we have the proper identification of the subject involved in this incident. Following that, our second objective is to determine whether this was an act of terrorism or not.".

Video presented at a news conference showed a tumble of charred fireworks mortars, cannisters and other explosive devices crowded into the back of the pickup. The truck bed walls were still intact because the blast shot straight up rather than to the sides, police said.

The truck sat for around 20 seconds outside Trump International Hotel before it exploded, it is understood. It happened at around 7.30am local time yesterday, several hours after the terror attack in New Orleans. Police are yet to release the name of the 37-year-old man they believe was responsible for the Vegas blast, but raided a townhouse in Colorado Springs as part of the probe. Speaking in Las Vegas, Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the investigation is comlex and may continue for some time.
