Les Ferdinand is well into his stride by the time he tackles Tottenham's perennial puzzle of style versus substance from the perspective of Kevin Keegan's 'Entertainers' at Newcastle. He has been through his exit from Queens Park Rangers, his thoughts on developing young footballers, hopes for the future and work to improve awareness of prostate cancer in the black community, and we will return to that in good time.
He has dropped the fastener from his lapel badge, disappeared under the sofa to retrieve it in a flash and emerged smiling because he knows the power of what shows up front is no good without some sort of security at the back. 'We were all out attack and I was a centre forward so that was enjoyable,' says Ferdinand on his two years on Tyneside under Keegan. 'David Ginola and Keith Gillespie on the wings, Peter Beardsley in behind, Then Alan Shearer came in. Then Tino Asprilla.
'I got into trouble for saying I had no idea what Asprilla was going to do because he didn't know himself. I meant it as a compliment. I'd never seen ability like it. He was incredible. 'It was like if you score one, we'll score two because we've got the attacking power. In hindsight, I think to win the Premier League you need to be pragmatic.
Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham are in the bottom half after struggling to string results together this season. Ferdinand thinks there are similarities between Postecoglou's Tottenham and Kevin Keegan's Newcastle, who were dubbed 'The Entertainers'. Ferdinand believes Tottenham will need to be more pragmatic to be successful.
