Lionel Messi has supposedly disclosed his next move once his Inter Miami career concludes. The Argentina great’s contract with Miami, signed back in 2023, has just one season left to run and it remains to be seen whether he will stay in the MLS for 2026. Miami are hopeful of tying Messi to a new deal, but it is clear the Barcelona icon has started making plans for the future.
That involves returning to the Spanish city where he made his name after initially joining the La Liga giants at the age of just 13. That’s according to Argentine media personality and friend of the Messi family, Yanina Latorre. She recently visited the 37-year-old’s Florida home, where they spoke about what the future holds for the football icon. She said via La Nacion: "He told me that when he finishes here [in Miami], where he is happy, he will return to Barcelona.”.
When Latorre asked Messi if he would consider staying in Miami, he is said to have told her: "No, my place is there.". Inter Miami will move from the Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale to the new Miami Freedom Park in 2026. Whether Messi is still around for the big move will hinge on talks with the Miami owners, which include David Beckham.
Speaking at the end of last year, another co-owner, Jorge Mas, said per ESPN: "Messi is under contract through 2025. Leo and I will sit and discuss the future. As I have said before, and I will repeat it now: I fully expect that in the opening of our new stadium in 2026 and the opening of our 2026 MLS season after a trophy-laden 2025 season, that Leo Messi will be our No. 10.".
