Little-known button on your washing machine could save you money on energy bills

Britons are being warned that a little-known button on their washing machine could help them save money on their bills. New research shows that millions of people struggle to get to grips with their household appliances. It found four in 10 people simply stick with the same washing machine setting each time.
Of the 2,000 adults surveyed by Utilita Energy, around 59 percent simply admitted they use the “quick wash” setting on their machine, reports the Daily Mail. However, understanding what the settings mean could actually save you money. Utilita says switching your machine to the often misunderstood eco mode is a quick way to save costs on your wash. The firm believes many people mistakenly believe the eco setting costs more money, when it could be the exact opposite.
Despite taking longer, the eco wash setting is said to be more energy efficient. However, around 77 percent of people said they don’t use the setting, with around half saying the longer cycle puts them off. A spokesman for Utilita Energy , which commissioned the poll said: “Kitchen appliances are designed to make life easier, but for many, the endless buttons, settings and features can feel overwhelming. It's no surprise that so many end up using the same setting time and time again.
“We're aware that the ‘eco’ mode has been confused for an ‘ecology’ mode, which people assume is high cost for the pocket, but low cost for the environment. Using the right settings can reduce energy consumption, cut waste, and improve efficiency... Small changes in how we use our appliances can lead to big savings over time.”.
