Liverpool: Arne Slot explains Trent Alexander-Arnold substitution as Real Madrid transfer is questioned

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has explained his decision to substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United. The Reds boss saw his side miss an opportunity to open up an eight-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, after the Gunners were held by Brighton on Saturday.
Slot's side fell behind early in the second half when Lisandro Martinez found the back of the net with a powerful effort. Though Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah would strike twice in quick succession to put the hosts ahead with 20 minutes left. Still, there was time for a late sting in the tale as Amad Diallo equalised with a composed finish and United could have stolen all three points right at the death but Harry Maguire somehow missed the target from close range.
Certainly a better point for the visitors, but from a Liverpool perspective, a lot of criticism has been aimed at Alexander-Arnold as both of Man Utd’s goals came down his side and he struggled up against Diogo Dalot. In a week where speculation over his future as been at the forefront, Slot was asked if links to Real Madrid had affected the right-back after substituting the right-back in the closing stages.
“I don't believe in those things, but nine of 10 people will you it affected him,” the Dutchman said. “I will tell you he didn't. He played Diallo and Fernandes. It tells you how much quality United has. “It's more difficult for Trent to play against them than the rumours that were there. My opinion is different. It wasn't that he had to play them on his own because Ryan was there, but he was in a 1v1 situation. It was clear Trent had difficult moments. The majority of moments he played for this team were very good.
