A secret Tina Turner song has been discovered after 40 years. Hot For You Baby – which was originally intended to be on the late star’s 1984 Private Dancer album – is being released on March 21. The single is being put out as part of an anniversary edition of that solo breakthrough collection of tracks.
Private Dancer was nominated for album of the year at the 1985 Grammys and featured the Grammy-winning songs What’s Love Got To Do With It and Better Be Good To Me. The re-release also has other previously unreleased tracks, live performances and footage, including a 55-minute Private Dancer Tour show, with the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll filmed at Birmingham’s NEC over two nights in March 1985.
Directed by David Mallet, it also features David Bowie and Bryan Adams, who performed. Turner, known for her soulful hits and a commanding stage presence, was a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and won 12 Grammy Awards. The 1993 film What’s Love Got To Do With It dramatised her turbulent relationship with husband Ike Turner, who was allegedly abusive along with her dad. It earned Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett Oscar nominations for playing the couple.
Turner won the 2018 lifetime achievement award and three Grammy Hall of Fame awards for her hit songs. Theatre show Tina: The Musical, depicting her life from humble beginnings into a rock ’n’ roll star, began in the West End in 2018. Turner died aged 83 in Switzerland after a long illness. She lived in the country with her second husband, music producer Erwin Bach.
