Suspect Luigi Mangione has been charged with murder as an act of terrorism following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Prosecutors today said they were working to extradite Mangione, 26, from Pennsylvania to New York where the CEO, 50, was shot dead on December 4. Mangione had been charged with murder but the terror charge is a new development in the case that has gripped the US.
The terror allegation can be brought in New York when a person is accused of committing a crime "intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion and affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination or kidnapping.".
According to the Associate Press, Mangione's lawyer in New York has not commented on the development. Thompson was fatally shot as he walked to a Manhattan hotel where UnitedHealthcare was holding an investor conference. UnitedHealthcare is the largest medical insurer in the US and has been associated with denying more claims than other healthcare insurers in the country. The medical insurance industry has repeatedly faced criticism in the US over what many view as extremely high charges and denying people over pre-existing medical conditions.
