Luke Littler has become the focus of a media storm again following Adil Ray's controversial comments on his appearance and dietary habits. The 17-year-old is leaving a blazing trail in the darts world, cruising through the World Championships at Alexandra Palace. He's set to face Michael van Gerwen in the final of the tournament tonight (Friday, January 3), where a win would make him the youngest-ever champion.
Meanwhile, Littler's first year's pro earnings of more than £1 million have already earned him legendary status in the sport. Over the past year, the teen sensation's meteoric rise catapulted him into the upper echelons of UK sports fame. Such exposure brings substantial scrutiny - not all positive or related to his extraordinary talent. ITV's GMB host Ray sparked outrage this week when he discussed Littler's weight and was accused of 'fat-shaming' the darts sensation. He is not the only person to speak about Littler's appearance with former darts stars also delivering some controversial comments in recent times.
Ray came under fire for questionable remarks made on Good Morning Britain. He raised eyebrows with his comment when he said live on TV "I'm a little bit worried about Littler," after observing footage of the youthful phenom's career and his advance to the championship final at Ally Pally.
He added: "He's 17 and he's turning into the look of a darts player." He then raised concerns about Littler's diet by saying: "Look at him! He's admitting to having pizzas before a match. I'd be a bit worried." Kate Garraway proved to be the voice of reason when she insisted that she couldn't understand why Ray was fussing over Littler's appearance, especially given the young talent is clearly not affected in his game.
