A fighting fund set up to help find Madeleine McCann has seen its value soar to over £1m for the first time since the year after she disappeared. The bulk of the value of the ‘Madeleine’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned Ltd’ fund has been invested in stocks and shares. The portfolio increased from £848,305 to £955,334 in the 12 months up to March this year thanks to stock market successes.

The total value of the fund is now £1,028,753, up from £921,819 a year ago. It is the first time it has exceeded £1m since 2008, when hundreds of thousands of pounds were being donated by well-wishers. Royalties from Kate McCann’s book ‘Madeleine’ - which she penned in 2011 about the disappearance and ongoing search for her daughter - soared to £2,325 from just £216 last year. The increase in sales is believed to be linked to interest in the case generated by the trial in Germany of prime suspect Christian Brueckner.

Documents filed by Companies House state the cash in the Madeleine will be used to secure her safe return and to ensure “her abduction is thoroughly investigated”. Once that objective has been fulfilled, any money that remains will be donated to help solve similar missing person cases.

Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange has been given over £13million so far to investigate Madeleine’s disappearance. The British youngster, from Rothley, Leics, was three when she vanished from her parents’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007. Brueckner, 47, was named by German authorities as the prime suspect in her disappearance in June 2020.
