Major London airport evacuated after landside ‘incident’

A busy London airport has been forced to evacuate after an ‘incident’ was reported. London City Airport was briefly evacuated earlier this afternoon. A spokesperson for the airport did not confirm the nature of the incident, but said the landside area had been evacuated ‘as a precaution’. The landside of an airport is the part that’s open to the public, between the airport’s boundary and the boarding gates.
The incident has since been resolved, and passengers are now able to re-enter the terminal. Flight data showed several inbound flights in a holding pattern above the Thames Estuary while the incident was being dealt with. One passenger said they thought ‘several hundred people’ had been evacuated from the terminal and were waiting in the car park to re-enter. Others have heard differing explanations from announcements, with one hearing the incident was due to a ‘security incident’ while another at Stratford station heard there is an ‘ongoing police investigation’.
A London City Airport spokesperson said: ‘As a result of an earlier incident at London City Airport the landside area of the airport was briefly evacuated as a precaution. ‘We apologise for any inconvenience caused, however the safety of our passengers and staff is our number one priority. ‘The incident has now been resolved and passengers are re-entering the terminal.’.
