Summary at a Glance

Frogs eat unwanted slugs and snails... but don’t be tempted to keep fish in the same garden pond, as they will eat the frogspawn and tadpoles.

As well as frogs, you could soon have a thriving habitat attracting a wide range of wildlife including dragonflies, water boatmen and pond snails.

Making a wildlife-friendly pond can be as simple as burying a sink or another with container in the ground and adding bricks and stones to help frogs get in and out.

You can also plant marginal bog plants such as flag irises, marsh marigolds, and pond sedges around the edges, to help filter and oxygenate the water.

If you have a pond already, you might soon see frog spawn, as this is the time of year when females lay eggs.
