A man and child have been killed in a horror German mass stabbing on a nursery group, that has also left several people injured. Officers descended on Schoental park in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenberg at about 11.45am today after two people, including a young child were killed and two others severely injured. A 41-year-old man and 2-year-old boy were fatally knifed, police said on social media platform X/Twitter.
The two other victims were taken to a nearby hospital and are receiving hospital treatment. A 28-year-old man from Afghanistan was apprehended following the multiple stabbings and taken into custody. Police added there is not thought to be any danger to the public in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The local service said in a statement: "According to the current situation, a knife attack took place at around 11:45 a.m. in Schöntal Park, in which two people were fatally injured.
"The suspect was arrested in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene." An eyewitness speaking to the Main-Echo claimed the suspect was taken away "in a headlock.". Another publication, NiUS, said he had attempted to escape arrest via railway tracks in Aschaffenburg, leading local authorities to suspend local rail and road traffic.
Railway operators said trains to and from Aschaffenburg are currently being held back, with unclear implications for regional and long-distance traffic. Schoental Park has previously been classified as a "dangerous place" by local officials following a series of crimes in the area, including a robbery and assault. In October 2024, police carried out a major drug raid in which officers checked, identified and searched around 20 people gathered at the park .
