Nathan Ake says Kyle Walker will be a huge loss to Manchester City if the club captain leaves the Premier League champions this month. City boss Pep Guardiola revealed Walker was omitted from the squad for Saturday's 8-0 FA Cup win over Salford City after asking to leave the club after eight years.
Walker could have left to join Bayern Munich in 2023, after City won the Treble, but decided to stay and helped Guardiola's side win a record fourth league title in a row last season. But after struggling this season, Walker has decided the time is right for him to leave City, with fellow defender Ake claiming the 34-year-old England star will leave a huge void.
“He obviously wasn't in the squad today and he's 100 per cent a club legend,” said Ake. He's massive for us and has been massive for us over the years. This year as well, he's been a big character in the squad. “He deserves a lot of praise for all the years he's been a top player for this club. He's a good guy as well and I'm very good with him. Let's see what happens, but there's no doubt he's been a massive player for us.”.
Reflecting on City's win over Salford, their third in a row in all competitions after their mid-season crisis, Ake said: “I think we're doing better. Every game we're making progress. The only thing we have to do now is keep going into Tuesday against Brentford.
