A man has been convicted of murdering a 60-year-old in a violent attack in Redbridge, east London, involving multiple blows to the head. Marius Ziugzda, 48, was found guilty by a jury at Wood Green Crown Court of the killing of Brian Shields and now faces a lengthy sentence.
Ziugzda, of no fixed address, launched a sustained and ultimately fatal attack on Mr Shields, inflicting injuries consistent with multiple punches or kicks on 20 October 2022. Emergency services were called to Orchard Playing Fields, formerly Goodmayes Park Extension, following reports that Mr Shields was unresponsive. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two men had been living together in a disused pavilion in a park with Ziugzda having claimed, throughout the trial, that the two were friends. At the scene, Ziugzda approached the cordon, despite being told by officers that he could not enter, and told officers he had been with Mr Shields the previous evening.
Ziugzda said that he had slept at the location and had woken up there that morning to find Mr Shields had died. He told officers: “I killed him today, I don’t know what. My friend, in the morning I killed him.”. Despite this apparent admission, Ziugzda later changed his tune and said that he found the other man unresponsive having been away from the scene. Officers were suspicious of scuff marks and scratches on his hands but Ziugzda said he had been misunderstood.
