A man is fighting for life in hospital after a motorist "drove on the wrong side of the road and hit four people" in the West End of London. It is thought a "row outside a nightclub" led to the driver allegedly careering their vehicle into a group of people along Shaftesbury Avenue, a busy road in the heart of the capital in the early hours of this morning.

A 31-year-old man was swiftly arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. While one man is in a critical condition, three other people are hurt but the nature and severity of their injuries have not been disclosed by police. The investigation continues on Christmas Day.

Shaftesbury Avenue is lined with pubs, nightclubs and theatres. The major route connects Piccadilly Circus in the west to Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy, of Metropolitan Police, said: "Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes.

"Detectives are quickly progressing enquiries as part of this investigation. It’s believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement. Several scenes remain in place at the location today. This has been confirmed as an isolated incident which is not terrorism related.".
