Ruben Amorim insists he has the support of the Old Trafford board even though Manchester United’s decision not to sign a striker in the transfer window could backfire on him. The United boss admitted that not replacing Marcus Rashford and Antony – who have gone on loan to Aston Villa and Real Betis – is a ‘risk’ that could add to the problems giving him sleepless nights. Amorim has struggled to change United’s playing style and lost eight of his 19 games in charge ahead of Friday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Leicester City at Old Trafford.

‘I knew when I came here, I looked at the schedule, I looked at the team, and I understood my decision of changing everything in the middle of the season without new signings, it is a danger for a coach,’ he said. ‘I’m not naive, this is a sport of results and we are in a difficult situation. But since day one, I take these risks because in the end I think it’s going to pay off. ‘I feel the support of the board, if you’re asking that. I’m not the slightest bit worried about that. It’s just the pain of losing, that is the hardest thing to cope.

Man United boss Ruben Amorim lost eight of his 19 games but says he will keep taking risks. Kobbie Mainoo (centre) was used as a false nine against Crystal Palace after Man United failed to sign a centre forward in the January transfer window and let Marcus Rashford leave on loan. The defeat by Crystal Palace was Man United's fifth home loss in six Premier League games. ‘I explained all the risks to the board, and they said the same thing: “We need to start now”. We are doing that. Everyone has to decide, it is not just the coach today who decides one thing and then we change everything.
‘We try to find the right players with the physicality for this league; young players, hungry players. Sometimes we cannot spend a lot of money. ‘What I feel is that the club is taking its time. We know the urgency of the moment of the team but everybody here doesn’t want to make the same mistakes of the past. In the summer we will see, but like I said, we are being really careful with transfers because we did some mistakes in the past. We are taking some risks but it is the way we want to proceed.
‘I understand in this moment with a lot of losses, especially at home, the environment is really hard. ‘Of course you have difficult moments, hard to sleep, whatever. One good thing I learn in this moment, is that even in the good or bad moments, my idea is so clear, that I make the same decisions without any other concerns. ‘Even when you are winning, you doubt yourself. That is a good thing. I am always doubting myself, about everything. Even when I was winning all the games in Portugal, so it’s the same situation.
