Ruben Amorim’s two months in charge of Manchester United have aged him by ten years, according to the Red Devils head coach himself. He arrived in November, having led the Portuguese top flight with Sporting CP, to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag. Since then, the tactician has had to face a multitude of problems, juggling the side’s on-pitch struggles with the constant barrage of external noise from fans, the media and former United players.
However, as soon as he walked through the doors at Carrington, Amorim took a no-nonsense approach, stamping down his authority in a way he believes will lead the club out of its current turmoil. Whether that ends up being the case remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that some of his decisions have proven divisive.
Aside from United’s form, Amorim’s biggest struggle has been dealing with the ongoing Marcus Rashford saga. The Manchester United academy graduate has not featured under Amorim since December 12, after which he gave a bombshell interview declaring his desire to leave.
Rashford has been named in one matchday squad since - the 2-0 loss to Newcastle on December 30 - though Amorim has continued to play coy over whether the forward will leave before the transfer deadline on February 3. He addressed the situation in the lead-up to Sunday’s 1-0 win over Fulham, telling reporters: "I don't know. I really don't know. Guys, it's eight days. We will see in the end of the window what happened. And then we will talk about that in the moment.".
